Municipality of Canneto Pavese

The first historical evidences of a village called “Caneto” date back to the 12^th century, even though it is part of a region already inhabited in prehistoric times by tribes of ligurian origin. It is certain that a village named “Caneto” existed in the second half of the XII century. Canneto – or better Caneto – was the name of the parish but not of the municipality, which derived from the Gabbi family, a noble Guelph family from Pavia. They held Monteacutello de Gabbi – then reduced to Montù de Gabbi – as its lords from the 13^th to the 15^th century. What now presents itself as a single town was in the past centuries a group of different communities. Montù de Gabbi (Montuè), Beria, Vigalone, Canneto (the nucleus of the modern town) and Monteveneroso were autonomous entities up to the end of the Seventeenth century when, due to the fact they were considered too small to stand alone, they were united under Montù de Gabbi. In 1783 we start to see a representation of Canneto, Beria, Vigalone and then Monteveneroso in the Council of Montù de Gabbi. The 9^th of October 1885, during a council meeting, a change in the name of the town was proposed. This name is now renowned for its generous still and sparkling wines not just in Lombardy, but in numerous cities in Italy and America. With a decree from Umberto I King of Italy, from January the 1^st 1886 Montù de Gabbi officially changed its denomination into Canneto Pavese.
